The amygdala, the brain fear center, shrinks in volume with regular practice, correlating with reduced stress reactivity. The prefrontal cortex, responsible for executive function and emotional regulation, thickens. The hippocampus, critical for memory and learning, shows increased gray matter density. These changes occur after just eight weeks of regular practice, with effects strengthening over longer periods. The default mode network, a brain network active when your mind is wandering and ruminating, becomes less dominant with meditation practice. This may explain why long-term meditators report less mind-wandering and negative self-talk. Different meditation styles produce somewhat different effects.
