Spirulina: The Ancient Algae with Modern Promise

Spirulina is a blue-green algae that grows in both fresh and salt water. It was a food source for the Aztecs and other Mesoamerican cultures, harvested from Lake Texcoco. It has since been recognized as one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. By dry weight, spirulina is about 60 to 70 percent complete protein containing all essential amino acids. A single tablespoon provides about 4 grams of protein along with significant amounts of B vitamins, iron, and copper. It is also rich in antioxidants including phycocyanin, the pigment that gives spirulina its distinctive blue-green color. Phycocyanin has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Some studies suggest spirulina may help lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides while raising HDL cholesterol. It may also reduce blood pressure, particularly in people with hypertension. Spirulina has a strong, somewhat oceanic taste that takes getting used to. It is available as a powder, which can be added to smoothies, or in tablet form for those who cannot tolerate the taste.
