Hormesis: Why Small Stressors Make You Stronger

Hormesis describes a biological phenomenon where exposure to low doses of a stressor stimulates adaptive responses that make the organism more resilient to larger doses. This concept explains many seemingly contradictory health findings. Exercise is a classic hormetic stressor. Each workout creates temporary oxidative stress and microscopic damage. In response, your body upregulates antioxidant defenses, repairs and strengthens tissues, and increases energy production capacity. The result is that you become more resilient, not just to future exercise but to oxidative stress in general. Plant compounds called polyphenols are mild toxins that plants produce to defend against pests. When humans consume them, these compounds activate our cellular stress response pathways, triggering the production of protective enzymes. This is part of why vegetables are healthy. Intermittent fasting, cold exposure, heat exposure through sauna use, and even certain phytochemicals all operate through hormetic mechanisms. The key principle is that the dose determines the response.
