Sauna Use and Cardiovascular Health

Regular sauna bathing is associated with remarkable cardiovascular benefits according to research from Finland where sauna use is nearly universal. A study following over 2,300 middle-aged men for two decades found that those who used a sauna 4 to 7 times weekly had a 50 percent lower risk of fatal cardiovascular events compared to those using sauna once weekly. The benefits were dose-dependent and independent of other lifestyle factors. The mechanisms involve increased heart rate to 100 to 150 beats per minute during sauna, improved blood vessel function through heat-induced nitric oxide production, reduced blood pressure over time, and decreased systemic inflammation. Sauna use also mimics some of the cardiovascular benefits of exercise, though it should complement rather than replace physical activity. Sessions of 15 to 20 minutes at 80 to 100 degrees Celsius are typical. Hydration before and after is essential. Alcohol should be avoided in conjunction with sauna use. People with unstable cardiovascular conditions should consult their doctor before starting sauna therapy.
