Organic Food: What the Research Actually Says

The organic food industry generates over 50 billion dollars annually in the United States alone. Understanding what the evidence actually shows helps consumers make informed decisions rather than ones based on fear or marketing. Organically grown produce does have lower pesticide residues. A comprehensive analysis found that organic produce had 30 percent lower pesticide residue levels than conventional produce. However, both organic and conventional produce had residue levels well below safety thresholds in the vast majority of cases. The nutritional differences are modest. Some studies have found slightly higher levels of certain antioxidants in organic produce, but the differences are small and unlikely to meaningfully impact health. The most important dietary choice for health is eating enough fruits and vegetables, regardless of whether they are organic. Organic farming practices generally have environmental benefits including improved soil health, reduced water pollution, and greater biodiversity. These environmental considerations rather than personal health concerns are the strongest argument for choosing organic. If budget is a factor, prioritize organic for the foods on the Environmental Working Group Dirty Dozen list, which tend to have higher pesticide residues when conventionally grown.
